Break the word

Break the word splits a long subject word into its parts, says what each means, then finds the parts in other words.

The real slide Chalk makes, in the Classroom look. Every word is written for your lesson when you use it.

How to run it

  1. Show the parts and their meanings.
  2. Pupils work out what the whole word means.
  3. They find other words that share a part.

Why it works

Knowing the parts of words helps pupils read and spell new ones, and the effect is larger for weaker readers.
