Make sense of it

Explain it to yourself

Explain it to yourself gives pupils a step, fact or line of working and a few prompts asking why or how, and they explain it to themselves in writing or under their breath.

The real slide Chalk makes, in the Classroom look. Every word is written for your lesson when you use it.

How to run it

  1. Show the step and the prompts.
  2. Pupils write or whisper their explanation.
  3. Compare with a model explanation and improve their own.

Why it works

Explaining why a step works, rather than only following it, builds understanding that transfers to new problems.
