Know before you read

Know before you read gives pupils the few facts a text takes for granted, each with a picture, before they read it.

The real slide Chalk makes, in the Classroom look. Every word is written for your lesson when you use it.

How to run it

  1. Read the facts together.
  2. Ask pupils to say one back from memory.
  3. Point back to them when the text needs them.

Why it works

What pupils already know shapes what they understand: weaker readers who knew baseball remembered a baseball story better than strong readers who did not.
