Retrieval grid

A retrieval grid is a Do now of four short questions from last lesson, last week and last term, answered from memory before anything new is taught.

The real slide Chalk makes, in the Classroom look. Every word is written for your lesson when you use it.

How to run it

  1. Pupils answer alone, in silence, without notes.
  2. Go through the answers, and ask who got each one.
  3. Note the question most got wrong and come back to it next week.

Why it works

Pulling something out of memory strengthens it more than reading it again, and mixing old questions with new ones spaces the practice out.
